Rare 1953 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal – Borough & Shire of Swan Hill – Amor Sydney – Original Ribbon

An original Australian commemorative medal issued to mark the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953.

This example was presented by the Borough and Shire of Swan Hill, Victoria, as inscribed on the reverse. The obverse features a crowned portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by the inscription “Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II – 2nd June 1953.”

Manufactured by Amor of Sydney, whose small “AMOR” maker’s mark can be seen beneath the Queen’s portrait. This issue is catalogued as Carlisle 1953/39 and is reported to have had a mintage of approximately 5,000.

The medal retains its red, white and blue commemorative ribbon and original-style pin fitting, which adds considerably to its character as a surviving piece of Australian Coronation memorabilia.

The medal displays an attractive aged patina with surface wear and loss of some of the original finish, consistent with its age. It has not been polished, preserving its vintage appearance.

A lovely and increasingly uncommon piece of Australian royal, Victorian and Swan Hill local history, now over 70 years old.
